So often practitioners only focus on microbial balance in the intestinal tract; however, the root cause may be occurring higher up, with emerging research telling us we need to look at the entire gut microbiota from top to bottom – including the mouth!
A ground-breaking 2018 review indicates our oral microbiome might be far more complex and fragile than previously thought and suggests oral dysbiosis is associated with significantly higher rates of intestinal symptoms and chronic disease.
Over 1300 microbial strains have been discovered in the oral cavity and with only 50% named and documented, there is still a lot to learn. Studies indicate that the transition from the hunter-gatherer to farmer shifted the oral microbial community to a disease associated configuration. Modern oral microbiota ecosystems were found to be markedly less diverse than traditional populations, which might now be contributing to not only chronic oral issues but also systemic disease.
In the upcoming ‘Toxic Gut Link’ seminar we will also be discussing unique prescribing strategies incorporating a ‘top to bottom’ approach, to gain even better clinical results.
