Is acidosis a driver of thyroid dysfunction?

Did you know that Rachel Arthur, a well-known educator and clinician, suggests that thyroid dysfunction of many females could be the result of a large metabolic acid load?

Research illustrates that acidosis creates impaired thyroid hormone production and release, and produces changes on thyroid function tests, with the most characteristic pattern being:

+ High normal TSH
+ Low normal – normal T4
+ Low normal T3

This effect is the result of multiple negative interactions between excess acidity and the endocrine system, e.g. raising cortisol, as well as direct interference with thyroid hormone release from the gland.

So, in females who present with low T3, it is important to seriously consider…
